10 Tips for Holiday Reunions
Always have a healthy breakfast with protein. A low carbohydrate breakfast is a good start with eggs and turkey sausage or turkey bacon. If carbohydrates are a must, one wheat toast or a few crackers (<70 calories).
Do not go without eating for too long. If you have a 3 pm Thanksgiving dinner, get a lunch with salad and 3 ounces of fish or chicken. Starving prior to eating will make it likely to eat more than you should.
Keep exercising or get your 10,000 steps per day. Exercising will burn calories in a steady way, and you can have a little desert (portion control) with your love ones!
You deserve it!
Choose wisely! Choose special plates or side dishes that are low in carbohydrates such as vegetables and high protein sources. Turkey is good source of protein. Choose white or dark but AVOID gravy at all cost! A well seasoned turkey won’t need any!
Put all your dinner on one plate. You will know the total amount consumed at the end of the day. This should include appetizers and dinner all on a plate no more than 9 inches. AVOID at all cost going back for seconds! Also, do not cheat yourself, no mountains of food allowed! The Orbera Program will help you integrate portion control to your lifestyle, the balloon will be a tool to reduce the intake amount and nutritional experts will guide to achieve your weight loss goals.
Eat slowly! Put fork down for few seconds, enjoy a good conversation with people around you, you will see that the brain will let you know you are full by the time you finish up with that small plate.
Before you get to Thanksgiving day, hydrate! Water will help you eat less! Drink a glass at least 30 minutes before planning to eat your dinner feast!
Everybody knows your family gathering on Thanksgiving is one where huge amount of carbohydrates are available. Offer to bring a healthy side plate to share for those counting calories, then you won’t have an excuse and you will be happy having a healthy selection on hand. Thanksgiving Day after all, this is the beginning of the Holiday Season, there are more challenges to come! Believe me!
I want to share a recipe we use at Crespo Residence that we love with NO carbohydrates! We have featured both of these on our Facebook pages previously. My motto: “En dos patás!” Meaning love to cook easy recipes, no more than 5 minutes preparation!
Bacon Green beans
Take a bag of green beans; cut ends; boil them in water with salt to taste for 5 minutes! Take out of hot water, drain and set aside for few minutes. Take half of a bacon slice and wrap around 5 green beans and do the same with the rest. Put them on a flat baking sheet and bake on 350 until bacon is done, 10-15 minutes!
Take a cauliflower head and divide it into pieces. Put in boiling water with salt to taste. In addition, get a few pieces of garlic, this depends on how much garlic flavor you want , could be a minimum of 5 little pieces to as much as you want. Remember you will be talking to other people, take that into consideration!
Boil cauliflower and garlic for 5 minutes ! Put in food processor and low salt/ low caloric butter, no more than 1 TBS, mix in food processor; serve and eat immediately, this side dish tends to get cold fast!
Weight yourself in the morning the day before Thanksgiving, on Thanksgiving day, and the day after. This will show how well you did! And congratulate yourself for a job well done if you maintain the same weight! That by itself is a milestone. We really recommend that you record you weight daily and to write a journal of your intake on daily basis. This is a great way to get control on your weight and know what is working or not!
